BOCC also offers a flexible co-location service and our racks all come with the BOCC peace of mind package, protected power and environmental controls. We can host single 'U' servers in our secure managed racks or provide entire racks to ensure optimum security.

Co-location prices are also flexible and enable you to pay for only the services you need and use. You can also reserve space at a low cost and install your equipment over longer periods enabling a transfer to BOCC co-location to be as smooth as possible.

The service provides free remote hands and onsite engineer management from our technical team. No waiting in call queues or having to jump in your car, you can speak to our team directly and we can sort the problem out straight away.  If you need warranty maintenance work or swapouts, BOCC will manage these - all included in your service.

Virtual servers

BOCC virtual servers provide maximum flexibility and fast deployment.

These dedicated virtual servers enable maximum flexibility for your application or web server hosting requirements.

You can specify your virtual machine requirments and only pay for what you need. A typical virtual server includes:

  • 1 Gb Memory
  • 10 Gig HDD
  • Ubuntu Server / Microsoft® Windows™

Virtual servers are available from £ 19.99 per month.

BOCC also specialise in dedicated virtualised servers for clients requiring maximum flexibility and maximum performance and security. Contact Operations Director Marcus Mills to have a chat about your hosting requirements.

Business continuity

Clients who run critical or high profile services are encouraged to consider business continuity planning as part of their hosting account with BOCC. Areas included in our business continuity services include disaster recovery, load balancing and application firewalls.

We offer a number of options when planning a hosting solution and we will only recommend the most resilient, secure and sustainable. Areas that you may want to consider are:

Hosting resilience

The BOCC secure disaster recovery facility is situated over 150 miles away from our core data centre in Oxford. We provide automatic failover and automated real-time replication of data to our disaster recovery facility. For data security a Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel is configured between primary server(s) and DR server(s) in order to replicate data.

In the event of a primary system failure BOCC configures DNS entries so that the DR system can be brought online. Find out more...

Clustered or virtualised hosting

Clustering is the use of multiple servers to form what appears to end users as a single highly available system. We often recommend clustering options for load balancing reasons, as well as for high availability of applications.

A virtualised hosting environment provides a sustainable environment for multiple applications with large numbers of concurrent users. It also provides a flexible and scaleable environment for the future as organisation needs grow and change.

Application firewall

We strongly recommend the installation of an application firewall for clients whose applications are either transactional or hold sensitive data. An application firewall is an enhanced firewall that limits access by applications to the operating system of a server. Conventional firewalls merely control the flow of data to and from the central processing unit (CPU), examining each packet and determining whether or not to forward it toward a particular destination. An application firewall offers additional protection by controlling the execution of files or the handling of data by specific applications.

Load balancing

We examine the server hosting requirements inline with the actual application and recommend load balancing as appropriate. Load balancing is about dividing the amount of work that a server has to do between two or more servers so that more work gets done in the same amount of time and, in general, all users get served faster. Load balancing can be implemented with hardware, software, or a combination of both. Typically, load balancing is the main reason why we recommend server clustering or virtualisation.

Uptime monitoring reports

Every web hosting solution with BOCC benefits from an inclusive website uptime monitoring service:

  • Tested every 5 minutes, 24 hours per day, from BOCC's disaster recovery (DR) data facility
  • Reporting, statistics, charts and data export available through the client login area
  • Server (website) reports check for the presence of a word or phrase on a particular page address
  • Clients have access to two types of report - a single network uptime report, and multiple server uptime reports.

Network Uptime

Network connectivity is monitored separately to servers. If the network is down, access to the server will also be affected, and server uptime may record a simultaneous failure.

Server (Website) Uptime

Server failures are monitored by requesting a web page and checking for the presence of a word or phrase in the received content. Thus a server might be live and available, but the web page may not be served in time or does not contain the word. Any of these count as a failure.

Domain name registration services

In addition to hosting services BOCC offer a full domain registration and management service.

BOCC is a domain name registrar and full voting member of Nominet; in addition is an approved UKERNA ISP member. This enables us to register and manage a variety of domain names on behalf of our clients, so that they can be sure that renewals and DNS changes are handled and managed correctly.

Nominet is the official registry for .uk Internet names. As an approved Nominet registrar all domain names are registered inline with Nominets' Terms and Conditions. We ask our clients to confirm that they agree to these before we register any names on their behalf.

BOCC can directly register '.co.uk' and '.org.uk' domain names and others such as '.com' and other national registries. BOCC has specialist knowledge of '.ac.uk' and '.gov.uk' domain name application procedures through the UKERNA process.

IPS tag BOCC

We can take over the management of existing domain names by clients authorising the transfer from current registrars to BOCC. This means that a single supplier, rather than many, can easily keep track of your registrations. BOCC also operate our own resilient domain name servers.
