The Bartington Instruments (1) MS2 Magnetic Susceptibility System (2) comprises a meter with a wide range of individually calibrated sensors for measuring the magnetic susceptibility of soils and rocks in both the field and laboratory. It is the international standard for magnetic susceptibility measurements in environmental sciences. Applications include geological and soil surveys, palaeomagnetics, archaeological prospecting, palaeoclimatic studies, hydrology, sedimentology, core logging/correlation, and magnetic fabric analysis.

Bartington required software to be written to undertake laboratory measurements with the MS2B, MS2C, MS2E or MS2G sensors and to store, analyse and save the data.

Solution

BOCC offered to develop a desktop application to interface with the MS2 using the optional RS232 interface.

Working with Bartington, BOCC developed the specification into a series of data entry and functional screens. These were then coded and tested prior to release for final acceptance testing by Bartington.

Benefits

BOCC were able to offer a single point of contact for the complete software specification, development, testing and creation of documentation. This facilitated communication and ensured the project was completed successfully.

The software has been made available for direct download by MS2 users from the Bartington website.

Technology

The software was developed originally in Visual Basic 3 for Windows 3.11 users and later using Visual Basic 5 and 6 for 32 bit Windows operating systems (3).

Distribution uses a single downloadable self-extracting utility which configures default settings. Manuals, also written and published by BOCC, are downloadable from the website in Adobe PDF format.

The website and software distribution is hosted on BOCC servers.
