RSS Feeds Case Study - Making Local Food Work

Overview

'Making Local Food Work' - community enterprise connecting land and people through food, is a Big Lottery funded initiative managed by the Plunkett Foundation. The five year partnership programme is aimed at reconnecting people and land through issues of food: access to fresh, healthy, local food and food that has a clear provenance.

Objectives

To provide news feeds from the community portal website, that is easy to subscribe to and can be syndicated to Partner and other programme members websites.

Solution

The community portal uses the YouDu CMS (BOCC's own content management system), which the Partners manage and maintain the site. One of the core standard features of the YouDu CMS is the both the syndication and consumption of RSS (Real Simple Syndication) Feeds.

BOCC created the initial feeds used to publish frequently updated content such as news and events from the portal site in a standardised format.

The standardised XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. Any user can subscribe to a feed by entering the feed's link into the reader or by clicking on the RSS subscribe icon in the browser that initiates the subscription process.

As well as syndicating news from the portal, MLFW also consumes news using 'Feedburner' to automatically bring in and update news stories from third-party providers.

Users can also submit MLFW news items to social bookmarking sites, such as digg and del.icio.us.

Technologies

The system utilises:

  • YouDu CMS
  • Microsoft™ SQL Server 2005
  • Adobe® ColdFusion®
  • AJAX
  • Content syndication and consumption
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server
  • Fully managed dedicated web server at BOCC
  • SSL (Secure Server Certificate)
  • Extensible HyperText Markup Language 1.0
