Visual and Interface Design for a Community Portal Website Case Study - Making Local Food Work

Overview

'Making Local Food Work' - community enterprise connecting land and people through food, is a Big Lottery funded initiative managed by the Plunkett Foundation. The five year partnership programme is aimed at reconnecting people and land through issues of food: access to fresh, healthy, local food and food that has a clear provenance.

Brief

The brief for the Making Local Food Work (MLFW) portal website was to create a design that explained the objectives of the project, demonstrated local food produce in season, directed users to appropriate information and included the new brand identity for the initiative. The site was also to link through to the ProgrammePartners Extranet and encourage signup to the MLFW eNewsletter.

Solution

There are three stranded areas for Consumers, Sellers and Initiators. Each of these were divided into three distinct entry points in the design. Information about the Programme is shown in a main content area with news from relevant schemes being fed into the site via RSS feeds. Engagement with the Programme is encouraged via an email newsletter signup area and there is an entry point for all Partner Extranet users.

Seasonal produce is demonstrated in the centre of the design with a rotating image of four products that will change per season. The overall navigation is kept simple and clear down to four possible levels.

Along with the main portal website a Partners' extranet was developed with an interface designed to cohese with the main site and have an intuitive architecture. This was achieved by having a combination of tabbed interfaces and information areas that can be closed when not needed.
