Overview

The British Academy, established by Royal Charter in 1902, is the UK's national academy for the humanities and social sciences.

Objectives

The Academy wanted to completely redevelop their online web presence and make it easier for staff to update the website using a content management system.

Solution

BOCC worked closely with Web Content Manager and IT team to develop the new website. BOCC created the information architecture / structure and functional modules for the new website. The portal was visually designed by BOCC's design team based on existing brand guidelines and styles.

Features of the website and project include:

  • Page content managed and maintained using YouDu CMS;
  • Developed to W3C WAI level 'AA';
  • Maintenance of publications using the CMS Assets Library;
  • Technical consultancy to confirm project requirements and integration;
  • News stories integrated with existing ASP data sources;
  • Integration with existing back-office proprietary databases;
  • User registration system to sign-up to the Academy's eNewsletter.
BOCC also created a content migration process in order to import and map data from the existing website to the new CMS. This therefore avoided the need for Academy staff to populate the new website from scratch.

Technologies

The system utilises:

  • Microsoft™ SQL Server 2005
  • Adobe® ColdFusion®
  • AJAX
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server
  • Secure replication of data from internal systems via a virtual private network (VPN)
  • Fully managed dedicated web server at BOCC
  • SSL (Secure Server Certificate)
  • Extensible HyperText Markup Language 1.0
  • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) 2.0 compliant
